43 great things to do in Prague

Prague has so many sights in the city that when visiting for the first time, it can be overwhelming. This page will help you to do what you want to do in the Golden City. I did those sights in three days, so it is possible. in a couple of days, but you will be doing a lot of walking. The city is very walkable, and it is great to walk around! I put the sights in the neighbourhood it lies in, so you can also skip certain sights by neighbourhood, as not everything will be fantastic to everyone. There are also sights outside the very busy city centre, so you can absolutely find hidden gems as well!

Old Town/Staré Město

Staré Město is the famous old part of the city, and you will definitely cross this area a lot when visiting Prague. The area is very beautiful with many great sights, but it also can be very busy with tourists. Because of the crowds and the tourist shops and restaurants, it is not my favourite area of the city.

Feel impressed at Staroměstské náměstí

Staroměstské náměstí is the main square of Prague, and it is so beautiful. There are several great sights to explore here, and the square has so many pretty buildings. Throughout the year there are several markets on it. I visited the city several times during the last visit, as you come across this square pretty easily.

Have a visit in the Church of Our Lady before Týn

I will not be the only person to think that is the most beautiful building in the city. The Church of Our Lady before Týn looks mediaeval, and it is my favourite sight on the Staroměstské náměstí. You can often see the building from several viewing points in the city. You can also visit the church on the inside, but that is less impressive.

Try to understand the Astronomical Clock

The astronomical clocks (on the left here) are very famous in Prague, and it is a bit difficult to understand how they work. Although it is one of the most famous things to do, it is not my favourite. Every hour there is a "show", which takes a couple of seconds. For me that is not interesting, but there will be many people waiting.

Visit the first st Nicolas Church

The St Nicholas Church of the old town (there is also one in Malá Strana) is the last sight on Staroměstské náměstí and the one a lot of people will skip. The church is not very special but is a good thing to walk in for a moment. The lighting is gorgeous, but further, it is a pretty average church.

Visit the statue of Franz Kafka

Of course this is not one of the main highlights of this city, but it is a nice statue very close to one of the synagogues of Josefov. The statue is of one of the most famous inhabitants of Prague: Franz Kafka. He is one of the most famous writers, but most Czech people are not as proud of him, as he was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Have a look at the gorgeous Prašná Brána

Prašná Brána, or the Powder Tower, is the last official city gate in Prague. There were 13 city gates before, but it is the only one left. Built in 1475, this is a special sight east of the city centre. You can head up to the top to enjoy a view of the city. I did not do it, but it should be a good view.

Feel humble at the Jewish Cemetery

The Jewish cemetery is in the heart of the Old City, and it is absolutely worth a visit. Classic to a Jewish cemetery are the graves that are very close to each other. It is not too big but very impressive. The tickets are in combination with different synagogues in the area of Josefov (see below).

Price: 600 CZK (in combination with the other synagogues)

Visit the several synagogues in Josefov

Pinkas Synagogue

This synagogue is impressive with all names of victims of the Second World War in Czechoslovakia

Old New Synagogue

The most classic synagogue, which is the oldest operating synagogue in Czech Republic. Very cool to see.

Maisel Synagogue

The Maisel Synagogue is a interesting synagogue that is mostly a museum to visit in Josefov.

Spanish

The most beautiful synagogue in Josefov is the Spanish Synagogue. Take a moment to sit down and enjoy the beauty.

These synagogues are, in combination with the Jewish cemetery (see above), an interesting museum. The ceremonial hall and Klausen synagogue were closed in April 2025.

New Town/Nové Město

Nové Město may sound new, but it is mostly built in the 14th century. It is the neighborhood east of the Moldau, and it surrounds the old city. The streets are a bit more quiet than the old city, but there are still some good sights. Make sure you will walk here as there are some good things to do in a bit more quiet area.

Be surprised at The Man Hanging Out

This statue is one of the weirdest I have seen. You can just walk in the area, and out of the blue, you see this statue hanging in the centre of Prague. The statue is made by one of the most famous Czech artists: David Černý. It may not be your highlight, but when in the area, check it out!

Watch the rotating head of Franz Kafka

This is another statue of the famous writer Franz Kafka, but it is very different, as this statue moves a lot, and that makes it special. The movement is said to be only 15 minutes on the hour, but it also happened a bit while I was in totally different minutes of the hour.

Have the best time in a Beer Spa

For me, this is the best experience in the city of Prague. I went to Original Beer Spa, but there are definitely more. You will have an hour to get into a private bath with water, yeast, and malt. In my case there were two taps per person with pilsener and a dark beer, which you can make for yourself. In this hour you can have unlimited beer, and it is fantastic to enjoy a cold one while enjoying a lovely spa hour. There was also an option to get on a hay bed, but I mostly enjoyed the bath with beer. This combination is great, and you will enjoy the hospitality, the beer, and making your skin very soft. Note that you need a reservation!

Price: 4255 CZK per two persons, where I went, but obviously this can differ per organisation

Have a party or walk at Wenceslas Square

This is one of the most popular street (as it is not really a square in my opinion). During the day you can have a cool walk to the national theatre, but it is totally different in the evening. Then there are bars, strip clubs and clubs, and it is not really interesting to me, as it can be very trashy.

Pass through the Lucerna Passage

Very close to Wenceslas Square is the Lucerna Palace, which is a passage with the highlight of the paternoster elevator, which will not stop and is open, so you have to step into it while it is going. Unfortunately it was closed when I was there, but the fantastic statue makes the passage also worth the visit.

Observe the gorgeous opera

If you are a fan of operas, you should absolutely check out the programme of this gorgeous opera. I am not the biggest fan of opera, so I did not go in, but the building is absolutely stunning. When passing the Moldau on the west side of the city, you will see this gorgeous building.

See the weird Dancing House

Is this the highlight of Prague? Many people like to see the Dancing House, but I am not that impressed. The building is funny-looking, so it is fun to see it, but after a moment, I am finished with it. The building has some offices in there and a rooftop bar, but I do not recommend going.

Find the Jerusalem Synagogue out of Josefov

Possibly the most beautiful synagogue in Prague is the Jeruzalem Synagogue. While most of the synagogues of Prague are in Josefov, the Jerusalem Synagogue is in the new town. The gorgeous outside is absolutely worth checking out, and you can also enter the gorgeous building.

Vinohrady

For me, Vinohrady is the best area of the city. The place is almost as gorgeous as other areas of Prague, but there are only a few other tourists.   The area is further to the east of Staré Město and Nové Město, so it is further to the River Moldau. The area is pretty fancy and filled with locals. The area lies a bit higher than other parts east of the Moldau.

Relax in Rieger Park

Rieger Park lies on the western side of Vinohrady and is a perfect place to relax for a bit. The park offers great places to sit down and enjoy the surroundings. You can have great views of the city (although the main sights are further away). There is also a lovely beer garden, which is worth visiting!

Walk around in this great area

Vinohrady is a fantastic area to stroll around. Walking in Prague in general is fantastic, but in Vinohrady it is even better! Watch a football match of one of the teams

Watching a football match is a great thing to do in Prague. There are many teams to visit, but I went to Slavia Prague. The atmosphere was absolutely great! The Fortuna Arena is not really in Vinohrady, but close, as it is in Vršovice. Vinohrady is the perfect place to be here before the game to Slavia, as there is not much to do around the stadium. The stadium of Bohemians FC is in Vinohady. Check the sites of several football teams to check out the options to visit a game.

Žižkov

North of Vinohrady and east to the Old and New Town lies Žižkov, which is not popular with tourists. To be honest I have not been to the area, but I saw the main sight from afar (spoken below).

Find the Žižkov Tower through the whole city

The Žižkov Tower is named the second ugliest building after Boston's city hall. The tower can be seen from all over the city, but very well from Vinohrady. The building was finished in 1992. There are statues of crawling babies by David Černý on the poles. You can climb up (which I did not do) to enjoy a great view.

Moldau

Technically, Moldau is not an area but the mighty river in Prague. There are several sights to visit on the river I will talk about. You will cross the Moldau a couple of times in Prague.

Walk the famous Charles Bridge/Karlův most

When you visit Prague, the first thing you will find is the Charles Bridge, which was built in the 14th century. The bridge is very pretty, and you should absolutely walk it when visiting this mighty city. Make sure you come early, as it will be quieter, so you will have a better experience on the 512-metre-long bridge. The statues on the sides of the bridge are impressive, and walking here is a great thing to do. However, it can be very crowded, and there are better sights in Prague. You will get the best view (see picture above) of the bridge from Střelecký Island (see below).

Enjoy the views and and walk on Střelecký Island

Střelecký Island is one of my favourite sights in Prague. One of the reasons is that you have the best view of the Charles Bridge and other sights of the city. Another reason is that it is a silent oasis in the busy city surrounded by the mighty Moldau River. I was so surprised it was so quiet, while it is in the middle of the city. You can have a little stroll, and you are almost alone. Other reasons to visit this park are the presence of many birds and nutrias. Do not miss this sight while visiting Prague!

Find Nutrias all around the river

From the Charles Bridge

Střelecký Island

Střelecký Island

Moldau East Side

Nutrias are rodents living in the city of Prague. Nutrias are a combination of a beaver's body and the tail of a rat. In Dutch we call it 'beverrat', which literally translates as 'beaver rat'. It is very fun to see them, but do not feed them, as they are an invasive species, which can be problematic. They originate in South America. Besides, they will get used to humans. I found three during my stay in Prague (the two in the middle are the same).

Hradčany

Hradčany is the first neighbourhood on the west side of the Moldau. This is the famous area that holds the Prague Castle, but it has more to offer because the whole area on the hill is part of this area. Make sure you visit the area when visiting Prague, even though it is crowded.

Visit the Prague Castle

One of the most important sights in Prague is the Prague Castle. This building stands on top of the hill, so parts are easily seen throughout the city. You can walk past the buildings and inside the walls without a ticket, but you need a ticket to get into some parts. I did not buy a ticket (heard that outside was good enough), but it was still absolutely worth visiting. The buildings you can enter with a ticket are:

  • Old Royal Palace
  • St George's Basilica
  • Golden lane
  • St. Vitus Cathedral (see picture above), very impressive cathedral

Price: Free, but if you want to enter the buildings 250 CZK

See the changing of the guards

In front of the Prague Castle there is the changing of the guards. It happens on a daily basis around 12.00 (they tend to start a bit earlier). The changing is a fun experience to see, but it is not the best. There will be many tourists, and there are better changing of the guards in Europe (for example, London and Athens).

Enjoy the views of Nerudova Street

Possibly the most beautiful street in Prague. From the castle you can walk down to the city centre by passing this street. Unfortunately, the bars and restaurants on this street are very touristy. Without that fact, it is a street that you should absolutely visit.

Visit a village in a city in Nový Svet

Nový Svet is a very cute part of town. It is not located at the Prague Castle, and it is often overlooked by tourists. It just consists of a couple of streets with cute houses and tea houses. This was my favourite part of Hradčany, as it was quiet and very different from other parts of the area.

Malá Strana/Lesser Town

Malá Strana is a gorgeous part of town west of the Moldau and south of Hradčany. It has many embassies, and it gives a posh, fancy feeling. However, it is close to many sights (the Charles Bridge is only a couple of minutes away); it is pretty quiet.  Most people I spoke to who have been to Prague think this is the best part of the city.

See the interesting Memorial to the Victims of Communism

However, this is a small stop; it is an interesting statue. The Memorial to the Victims of Communism reminds people of the victims of communism. Czechoslovakia was communistic from 1948 until 1989. In 2002 this monument was built. The Czech Republic may be the most critical country to communism of all countries that were communistic. There is a small sign with some information.

Find different sights on Kampa Island

Crawling Babies

Kampa Island

Water wheel

Kampa Island is called an island because it has a small stream separating the island from the city. On the eastern side of the island is the Moldau River. You can find a water wheel here. There are some good statues, like the Yellow Penguins and the Crawling Babies (which you can also find on the Žižkov Tower). The park is nice to have a small stroll in. I did not visit the Kampa Museum, but it can be interesting if you are into modern art.

Watch the creativity on the John Lennon Wall

The John Lennon Wall is a wall in Malá Strana, where people often put their protests. During communism someone painted the face of John Lennon and Beatles lyrics on this wall, which was prohibited during these days. Since then the wall changes every day as many people rewrite it. When I was there, there was a big painting of Trump and Putin. This is a nice stop and a good place to put your opinion.

Visit the second St Nicholas Church

Wait, what?! There is a second?! Yes, there is! There are two St Nicholas churches in Prague, and this one is the one in the west. It is a lovely church with a very cool dome on top. You can walk around the church, and you can also visit inside if you want to. You will pass this church during your stay, as it is very prominent.

Find the weird Piss Statue and smallest alley of Prague

The Piss Statue is a fun statue, but not more than that. Just enjoy and see the two guys peeing. Just around the corner is the smallest alley of Prague, but this is also not very interesting. However, the area is idyllic, so enjoy a stroll here, as it also has a good view of the Charles Bridge.

Strahov

Strahov is an area west of Malá Strana which mostly consists of nature and hills. This is a place to do some hiking, and it can be tough to walk up the hills. If you want to feel in nature while in a big city, head to this neighbourhood. Besides, there are some good sights to cover.

Hike the Petřín Hill

The thing close to the city centre which feels like nature is Petřín Hill. The hike up can be rough, so take your time, but it is nice. Of course it is close to the city, so not in real nature, but it is lovely. Sometimes you will have an impressive view of the city. Enjoy the sounds of birds and the quietness.

Feel in Paris when seeing the Petřín tower

On top of the Petřín Hill (see above) stands the Petřín Tower. The comparisons with the Eiffel Tower are unmistakable, but it is less impressive than its French brother. To have a fantastic tower on top of the tower. You can see this sight from all parts of town, and that makes it extra cool.

Explore the Strahov Monastery

I randomly passed this church, and it turned out to be a fantastic place to be. Especially the ceiling was extremely pretty, as it looks like clouds, and because of that, it makes me feel a bit like the Sagrada Família (of course that one is more impressive). This is a very good and quiet stop.

Anděl

Andel is a neighbourhood further away from the city centre, but it is cute. My accommodation was in this neighbourhood, which was nice, as there were almost no tourists, and you could also see the real local life of Prague. There aren't too many sights, but it can be fun to walk here if you are in the area. It is located further south than Malá Strana.

Have some food and drinks at Manifesto market Anděl

Manifesto market Anděl is a great place to go to, as it is a food market (which I very often enjoy). You can get some good beers and lovely foods from all over the world. There is Mexican, Czech, Asian, Italian and way more. It is an alternative style, which makes it even more interesting.

Price: Free, but the drinks and food isn't, of course.

Holešovice

Holešovice is a totally different neighbourhood in Prague. It lies in the north, so also north of the Moldau. The neighbourhood is big but does not have many sights. You do have to do some walking to find different sights, but you will see the real Prague. The area is also pretty alternative, which gives it an interesting vibe!

Spend some time at Strossmayerovo náměstí

Strossmayerovo náměstí is the main square in the north of Prague, where many trams will be going. The highlight is the Church of St Anthony (see picture above). It is fun to be on this square without other tourists and relax. This is not the best thing to do in Holešovice, but it is a good start.

Unfortunately, we were here when not everything was opened, but the vibe was very relaxed. This is a lovely area for a stroll.

Feel in a different world at Vnitroblock

When walking in the area, it looks like a normal neighbourhood, but around the corner there is a very trendy area. There are some shops, galleries and a bar/restaurant. Enjoy the view, while having a beer at Letná Lookout Beer Garden

Letná Lookout Beer Garden is so great as it gives a wonderful view, great atmosphere, and good beers. There are many tables, and sitting in the sun or shade is just fantastic! Metronom is a weird building/statue which looks pretty cool. This is the place where there was a huge statue of Jozef Stalin during communism. There are some good views as well. It is located in Letná Park, which is a great park to have a stroll in and see families hang out. There are good views throughout the park.

Food

Try some Czech food

Sausages

Pork belly

Svičkova with Knedlíky

Although the Czech Republic may not be famous for its food, they do have some good dishes to try. The cuisine is often meaty, which can be nice, but there is a lack of vegetables and fish. Some famous Czech dishes include knedlíky (dumplings), svičkova (meat), goulash, and sausages.

Try some fantastic Czech beer

The Czech Republic founded the pilsner in the nineteenth century (in Plzeň), and they still make fantastic beers. There are many bars where they serve great beers. Beers are pretty affordable, as they are cheaper than water in the Czech Republic (which is not true anymore). You cannot visit Prague and not have a cold pivo if you are into beer. Nowadays also craft beers are rising in the city of Prague.

Things I have not done, but can be interesting

  • The Prague Zoo (far north)
  • Naplavka market (Saturday morning, Malá Strana)
  • Grebovka (Park with vineyards, East)
  • Waldstein Gardens (Malá Strana)
  • Airship Gulliver (Holešovice)
  • Vyšehrad

Final Thoughts

Prague is a great city in Central Europe with many sights in several parts of town. The old town and the castle area are very crowded with tourists, but other areas can be quiet and sometimes more interesting. This is a fantastic city, which I will always recommend visiting!
