8 Amazing things to do in Mostar

Mostar is the fifth-largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the most adorable in the country. The bridges and mosques make this a unique place to visit. Jumping off the bridge is something very spectacular and creepy to observe at the same time. Walk through the centre and feel the cool atmosphere. To see what to do in Mostar, here are the sights:

Observe people jumping of Stari Most

One of the reasons to visit is probably Stari Most. This beautiful bridge in the middle of the city is fantastic. You will see people on the bridge, and they jump off for money. When they have around 25 euros, they will jump. That is very scary to observe, but you want to see it once. The bridge has been destroyed multiple times, but now is the place to visit in Mostar. You can walk the bridge for free, but if you want to be sure and you see someone jump, you can pay. Don't jump yourself. The people who jump are professionals.

Tourist occurrence: High

How much time needed: 1.5 hours, because of waiting for people who jump, but can be shorter.

Stroll through the cute streets of the city centre

Mostar is a very adorable, old city that has the feeling of being centuries ago in an Arabic country. Strolling around gives you opportunities to see shops with traditional stuff and eat local dishes everywhere. Just see and enjoy the vibe everywhere. It has a bazaar vibe, and you will love it.

How much time needed: 3 hours

Look for the crooked bridge

Stari Most has a small brother. The crooked bridge has the same architecture as his older brother but is way smaller. It is a cute version, but way less crowded and more relaxed to visit. The bridge is in the city centre.and can easily be found.

Be amazed to be inside a great mosque

The Koski Mehmed-Pasha Mosque is a beautiful mosque that you can enter as a non-Muslim. You may have to cover up some of your body parts. The first hall is stunning, with a lot of small colours everywhere. On the floor, there are cool carpets. You can both stand on the ground at half-height to give you another perspective. After this, you can visit the top of the minaret and enjoy the view of the city.

When you have watched the city from each corner, head back down and take a small walk in the garden, where you can enjoy taps and some more views of the river.

Price: Around 3 euros

Tourist occurrence: Low

How much time needed: 0.5-1 hour

Hope that there are activities and go party

When we were present, we saw different podiums and stages in the evening. We saw a club in a cave, which was extremely cool! There were many things happening, but we may have been lucky, although it could happen more often in this unique scenery.

How much time needed: A lovely night.

Feel sad in the Museum of war and Genocide victims

This museum mostly focuses on the terrible happenings during the Yugoslavian war between 1992 and 1995. You start the museum with some horrible personal stories, which can make you feel emotional. Downstairs, there is a bunker, a replica of how people were sheltered during the war. Above there is a section dedicated to Srebrenica, with the number of victims in those few days (see picture above)... The museum is very tough to go through, but it gives a view of how it was during the war for Bosniaks. The roughest part are the movies they are showing, which made me cry.

Price: around 6 euros

Feel the tension at Sniper Tower

It sounds weird to say this in such a beautiful city, but for me, this was the highlight of Mostar. Sniper Tower is a bit outside the city centre, but worth the visit. The building was used to see Bosniaks leaving the city and getting shot at. Nowadays, it is a building that is not used anymore. It is technically forbidden to enter, but they are not strict with it, so we went in. It can be rough to get in, and some climbing is probably necessary.

In the beginning, it seems scary because there are some weird corners where you cannot see if anyone is present. The walls are covered in graffiti and street art, which proves the presence of people. After a while, you will get comfortable, and then you may be alone in a fantastic building. You can walk up some levels (look out where you walk) and see some great views.

This is a very interesting thing to do because you can be nervous in the beginning, but in the end, you are alone in a really cool alternative building with cool street art.

Have a day trip around the area

A perfect day trip from Mostar is done with the scenic Blagaj and the fantastic Dervish house (see picture above), the really old and cool city Počitelj, and the relaxing Kravica Falls for a swim. A tour is convenient because the locations are difficult to come to with public transport, and a tour guide will give you an amazing insight into Bosnian life.

Price: Depending on the tour, around 50 euros per person.

Tourist occurrence: High

How much time: 6-8 hours

Things I have not done, but can be interesting

  • Old Bridge museum
  • War Photo Exhibition

Final thoughts

Mostar is a fantastic city to visit for a couple days. With good museums, great culture in the city centre, the Stari Most, and the cool Sniper Tower, Mostar is a fantastic destination when travelling to this amazing country.
