Romania itinerary

Romania is a lovely and surprising country, but what is your route itinerary? This page will help you find the route that suits you the best. The route is based on March, so, among other things, the Transfăgărășan Highway is not possible in the itinerary. I will show itineraries of 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks. The itineraries are based on arrival and departure in Bucharest. Here are the itineraries:

One week

This itinerary will show you the main highlights of Transylvania and the capital. I would recommend staying longer than one week, but when you have one week, this is, in my opinion, the best way to do it.

Day 1: Bucharest

Almost everyone will enter Romania by flying into the capital of Bucharest, which is a nice start to your trip through Romania. Visit the Palace of Parliament and the great neighborhood of Lipscani. If they play, visiting a football game at FCSB is a nice experience. Furthermore, there are more sights, such as the Cismigiu Gardens, Revolution Square, and the Romanian Atheneum. To learn more about Bucharest, take a look at:

Day 2: Bucharest - Sinaia

Take a one and a half-hour train ride from Bucharest Central Station to Sinaia. Today you can go to the mighty Peleș and Pelișor Castles to see the beauty of the buildings. Afterwards, enjoy the relaxed vibe of the village or make a small hike in the Bucegi Mountains.

Day 3: Sinaia - Brașov

First, start the day with a nice hike (in the Bucegi Mountains) or from town up a mountain. After the hike (which can also be skipped), go to Brașov by train (1 hour). Have a walk through the city centre and enjoy the sights of the city. To know more about what to do in Brașov, take a closer look at:

Day 4: Brașov, day trip Bran castle and Râşnov

After breakfast, head to Bran Castle by bus for 45 minutes and visit the birthplace of Dracula. The village and castle are fun to walk around and worth visiting. Afterwards, take a 25-minute bus ride to Râşnov and visit Râşnov citadel and the Valea Cetatii caves. Afterwards, take the 20-minute bus back to Brașov and enjoy the night.

Day 5: Brașov - Piatra Craiului

Take the train from Brașov to Zărnești, because Zărnești is the gateway to the Piatra Craiului national park, where great hikes are possible and wildlife can be spotted. There are also bear hides to spot these (and other) wildlife. I would recommend connecting with Transylvanian Wolf, who offers great hikes and bear hides.

Day 6: Piatra Craiului

Enjoy an extra day of spotting wildlife. Unfortunately, we did not find bears, but we did find deer, foxes, chamois, birds, including the Ural owl, and wild boar. Besides, we saw tracks of bears, wolves, and lynxes. You can also go to the traditional villages of Mâgura and Peștera, go to the Libearty Bear Sanctuary, or go to the Zărnești Gorge.

Day 7: Piatra Craiului - Bucharest

The trip takes about 3 hours, so depending on what time you will be leaving the country, you can either hike or enjoy nature in Piatra Craiului (free in winter) or see some more sights in Bucharest, or just head to the airport or leave the country otherwise.

Two weeks

Two weeks should give you some more time to visit places and add some more areas to see. This can be a good amount of time to really understand the country.

Day 1 & 2: Bucharest

Day 3: Bucharest - Danube Delta

I have not been to the Danube Delta, but by taking a 5-hour train ride to Tulcea, you will be in bird lover heaven.

Day 4 & 5: Danube Delta

Take boat rides to enjoy the fantastic birdlife in great nature. Try to spot birds, including pelicans, and have a wonderful time being in beautiful nature.

Day 6: Danube Delta - Bucharest

Go back to the capital and enjoy the evening in Lipscani or in other parts of Bucharest.

Day 7: Bucharest - Sinaia

Day 8: Sinaia - Brașov

Day 9: Brașov, day trip Bran castle and Râşnov

Day 10: Brașov - Sighișoara

Enjoy the cute city of Sighișoara and the colourful houses, views, and churches of this lovely city. The train ride from Brașov is around 3 hours, and you can even consider going back the same day to Brașov as Sighișoara is pretty small. One night can be recommended because you don't have to rush.

Day 11: Sighișoara - Piatra Craiului

This will take around 4 hours to get to by public transport, and then you can enjoy the fantastic nature in this beautiful national park.

Day 12 & 13: Piatra Craiului

Day 14: Piatra Craiului - Bucharest

Three weeks

Three weeks for me is the perfect amount to visit Romania, as it perfectly shows the beauty of the entire country. You can go from east to west.

Day 1 & 2: Bucharest

Day 3: Bucharest - Danube Delta

Day 4 & 5: Danube Delta

Day 6: Danube Delta - Bucharest

Day 7: Bucharest - Sinaia

Day 8: Sinaia - Brașov

Day 9: Brașov, day trip Bran castle and Râşnov

Day 10: Brașov, visit Prejmer and Harman

Prejmer and Harman both have great fortified churches, and these are perfectly visible on the same day to visit both cute villages. For the rest, you can experience more of Brașov.

Day 11: Brașov - Piatra Craiului

Day 12 & 13 & 14: Piatra Craiului

Day 15: Piatra Craiului - Sighișoara

Day 16: Sighișoara - Cluj

The train ride takes about three hours, and then you can walk around the city and enjoy the vibrant nightlife. Visit several churches and enjoy the fantastic craft beer scene.

Day 17: Cluj, day trip to Turda to visit Salina Turda and Turda Gorge

Take the bus to Turda and go to Salina Turda (see picture below) to enjoy one of the coolest things to do in Romania. Salina Turda is a salt mine where you can do a lot of fun things, such as ride a boat, play mini golf, ride a Ferris wheel, play table tennis, and bowl. After lunch in Turda, take a taxi to Turda Gorge and enjoy 2 hours of hiking. Afterwards, you can go back to Cluj.

Day 18: Cluj, Hoia forest and Romulus Vuia Etnographic park

Get haunted in the Hoia Baciu forest, as the legend says that there are ghosts, and that is why some of the trees grow weird and that there is an inexplicable open spot in the middle of the forest. For the rest, there is a good chance of seeing deer in the forest. Next to the forest, you can go to Romulus Vuia Etnographic Park, where there are local houses where you can wander.

Day 19: Cluj - Sibiu

Take a 4-hour train ride to Sibiu and enjoy being watched by the eyes of the houses. Enjoy a walk through the city and go to the squares and the Bridge of Lies. Have a nice dinner and relax in this city.

Day 20: Sibiu, day trip to Alba Iulia and Corvin Castle

Enjoy the day trip towards the first Corvin castle to see the most classic castle in the country. Enjoy a visit to the castle and walk around it to see the best views. Afterwards, go to Alba Iulia, which is a citadel with multiple sights and a lovely stroll around it. This is a great day trip.

Day 21: Sibiu - Bucharest

Go back to Bucharest to go back to your country.

Add to the itinerary

  • Painted Monasteries of Bucovina
  • Ride the beautiful Transfăgărășan Highway (only in summer)
  • Statue of King Decebalus - beautiful stone close to Serbia
  • Timișoara - Lovely city in the West of Romania
