7 Fantastic things to do in Serbia

Serbia is the biggest country in former Yugoslavia and also consists of the capital, Belgrade. We travelled here with public transport and a tour starting from Belgrade to Užice, but we were here for a very short time, so I cannot talk too much about the things to do. Here are the best things that we did:

See the mighty Belgrade

Belgrade is a fantastic city to visit, as it is vibrant, different, beautiful, and surprising at the same time. There are good museums, great sights, and a fantastic nightlife. Walk through the city and meet the lovely people. The capital has over one million inhabitants, and it is the biggest city in former Yugoslavia. This is the city to visit when in this area.

Tourist occurrence: Medium

How to get here: Belgrade is a large city and can be reached from all parts of the country and by air and public transport from a lot of international places.

How much time needed: 3-4 full days is the perfect amount to enjoy the city and see its sight.

Have a picture at the house on the Drina River

The house on the Drina River is built as a shelter for swimmers in the area. It has been damaged and restored several times due to high water. You can visit this view and see Bosnia on the other side of the river (right side of the picture above). You can even swim from one country to another in 1 minute! There is a nice restaurant next to the river.

Tourist occurrence: Low

How to get here: The house is close to Bajina Bašta, which is reachable by 3.5 hours by train or bus from Belgrade. We did it with a tour and it is 2.5 hours from Belgrade. Užice is a small hour away by car and over an hour by bus.

How much time needed: 1 hour.

Have a hike in Tara National Park

Țara Național Park is a beautiful park to have a hike in Western Serbia. There are multiple hikes to do. There are also some animals such as chamois, roe deer, otter, lynx, boar, wolf, and pine martens. The highlight may be the brown bear, and there are brown bear watching tours to do. This is the best place in Serbia to find brown bears.

Tourist occurrence: Low

How to get here: It is 1.5 hour drive from Užice.

How much time needed: Half a day - Full day

See the best view of Tara at Banjska Stena

This view in Tara National Park is outstanding. This is the most blue water I have ever seen. Again, on the other side of the river is Bosnia. Pictures do not show the beauty of their point. Walk up to multiple points (they are very close to each other, but not everyone notices them) to have different views. This is, besides the wildlife, the highlight of Tara National Park.

Tourist occurrence: Low

How to get here: This point is 1.5 hours from Užice by bus and 1 hour by car/taxi.

How much time needed: 1 hour.

Try some Serbian food

Serbian food is good, with some surprising tastes and herbs. Often, meat is the main ingredient, but there are vegetarian options as well. You can eat it anywhere in the country. Things to try are avjar, sarma, karađorđeva šnicla, borek, kajmak, and gibanica.

Feel like a movie star in Timber Town

Mećavnik is the most famous film location in Serbia. The town has a lot of different facilities for a "fake" village. The set is cool to visit for a while. There is a hotel where you can stay, but for the rest, nothing is real but fun to stroll around.

Tourist occurrence: Medium

How to get here: 40 minutes drive from Užice.

How much time needed: 0.5-1 hour

Be between locals in Užice

Užice is a city that is a perfect base for Western Serbia, and tourists are very scarce, which makes this the perfect spot to spend the night. This city will give you the real Serbian experience. There is a nice river to visit, and the main square is very lovely in the evening. The people are lovely and very open to you.

Tourist occurrence: Very low

How to get here: Belgrade is 2 hour drive away and 3 hours by train. You can also head to Montenegro from this city.

How much time needed: An evening and night is sufficient.

Things I have not done, but can be interesting

To be honest, the couple of days that I have been here are not sufficient to see the whole country. 4 days are not enough to give a good view of this country. There is so much more to see and do, but I may not be the one to inform you. There is much more to see!

Final thoughts

I have been here a few days, but Serbia seems very cool. The Belgrade and Tara areas are very interesting, and the people are very open. The country has much to offer, and I really want to see more of this country.
